Printing the Free Yes Pa Book

Easy steps in printing the Yes Pa book and involving the parent, teacher, child. This meets one of the primary objectives of our US Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. School print cost of the Yes Pa book - $1 dollar per student.  Print or download the PDF version of these instructions.

A simple and cost-effective way to share the Yes Pa book with your students and their parents (Approximate cost is less than $1.00/student):

  1. Download the free PDF file of the book onto your computer.

  2. Provide each student with a two-pocket folder to hold their Yes Pa materials.

  3. Copy the pages front-to-back, several chapters at a time. Important:  from the Print file in the PDF format, choose 2 pages per sheet.   I found that three chapters each time worked out well.  (This would use approximately 8-10 sheets of paper/student each time I made copies)

  4. When making copies on your Xerox machine, either turn the second sheet upside down, or leave them all right-side-up and select the function on the machine that says “rotate side two ON.”

  5. If you have an auto stapler on your Xerox machine, have the papers stapled in the upper right corner.

  6. I always made an extra 4 or 5 copies.  That way, if students left their folders home, they could borrow a classroom copy for the day.

Additionally, I have a SMART Board in my classroom.  As we read from the pages the kids had in their folders, I put the page up on the SMART Board as an added visual.  This really helped the kids see the photographs and illustrations.

I have used Yes Pa in my classroom for 12 years.  I have provided the book to the students in many other formats over the years.  Below are the pros and cons of each:

  • I had a classroom lab of laptop computers and saved the book to each computer.  The kids read it in class.  This was an inexpensive way to share the Yes Pa book with students but not effective as students could not share with parents.

  • I had a classroom set of printed copies of the book which were provided by the YesPa foundation.  These were free, but because they didn’t leave my classroom, they were not an effective tool to share with parents.

  • I have downloaded the PDF file from the website, printed it front-to-back, and had the Teacher Resource Center bind the pages into books, one for each student.  This was effective as students could bring the books home and share with parents, but the cost was about $3.00/student with the copying and binding at the TRC.

The Yes Pa Foundation would like to thank Joanne Agrasto Reed, 6th Grade English Teacher at Waterloo Middle School, Waterloo, NY 13165 for providing these instructions based on her 12 years of experience using the Yes Pa Character Education Program in her 6th grade classes and alternative education classes.
